Pedro J. Lemos is considered one of the most influential of the Bay Area’s ”craftsmen era” artists and educators. Lemos’ primary legacy, regarded today by many collectors, is represented through the exceptional quality of his color block prints, which he produced in limited numbers, circa 1915-1925. He is recognized as an important artist and educator of the applied arts and design in numerous mediums, and also as an architectural designer, writer, publisher, painter, and printmaker.
Quoting David Acton(Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts), ”A Spectrum of Innovation – Color in American Printmaking 1890-1940”, regarding his essay on Pedro J. Lemos:
”The leading exponent in California of the Arts and Crafts movement and Arthur Wesley Dow’s teaching and theories. Pedro Lemos also made his own prints. As a printmaker, this versatile artist worked in a variety of media making etchings, aquatints, and relief prints in color. However, his most influential roles were those of teacher, theorist, author, and arts administrator.”
