Ann Whittman Chapman was the daughter of early California artist - Paul Whitman (1897-1950).
In the late 1920s, Whitman moved with his wife, and the first two of his three children—Colden and Ann—to Carmel where he quickly gained notoriety for his oils, watercolors, lithographs, landscapes, and waterfront depictions. The family built a home on the fifteenth fairway at Pebble Beach, which also served as a studio.
He was one of the original members of the celebrated Carmel art community, which included over the years such notable American artists as William Ritschel, Armin Hansen (one of Whitman’s mentors), Gottardo Piazzoni, Charles Rollo Peters, as well as photographer Ansel Adams and poet Robinson Jeffers.
