Thomas A. McGlynn (1878-1966), whose artistic roots were in California tonalism under his mentor and former teacher Arthur Mathews, would later develop his own style of artistic expression.
McGlynn’s initial training was at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute- California School of Design in San Francisco, graduating in the same class as his close friend, Armin Hansen. They received their diplomas months after the 1906 earthquake/fire had leveled most of the old school building itself.
Prior to permanently moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 1945, McGlynn was a distinguished educator in San Francisco and at the University of California at Berkeley. For eleven years he was Chief Assistant to Arthur Mathews at the Furniture Shop.
Thomas McGlynn was an early member of the Carmel Art Association, serving twice as President as well as serving on the Board and becoming a lifetime member.
His work has been shown in Chicago, Portland, Los Angeles and other art centers of the country and his entries have been awarded numerous special honors.
His paintings are among the most lyrical of the school of California Luminists. Almost completely a landscapist, his paintings convey the poetry, the sense of majesty and tranquility which he sensed in nature.
